So here’s the plan:

Design a board

Build the board

Go to Cornwall and compete

Win all the trophies and return as surf gods/goddesses

Disclaimer: You may fail and have to burn your board as a punishment and sacrifice to the belly gods

Contest low down

Contest Format

The organized bit

The contest heats will take place in a clearly marked area (flagged).
The contest organizers/lifeguard will decide the best and safest state of the tide.
Entrants may catch as many waves as they want in their allocated time, however only your first 10 rides will be scored.
Entrants can surf outside or inside the break (dependant on conditions).
Surfers must make every effort to stay in between flags and avoid other entrants.
Lifeguards/organizers will cancel surfing if conditions become unsafe. This will be done by 3 blasts of the horn and the raising of the red flag.
Drop ins will not be scored.
The heat will start with a single horn blast and end with a double horn blast.

The Rules

The emphasis is on fun, but when the world title is at stake, there needs to be a rule or two…

Expression session (fun heats)
Expression session (fun heats) to be run before the WBBC and consist of two 10 minute heats – ladies first (naturally!), then men, on mass ! These first two fun heats will follow the press call/photo shoot. Judges will be looking for style, sportsmanship, length of ride and a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’.

World Belly Board Championship Heats
These are the slightly more serious heats for the World Title incorporating the Arthur Traveller Memorial Trophy. Approximately 20-30 heats of up to 8 persons per heat. Length of heat to be 10 or 15 minutes depending on the number of entrants. Mens and Womens heats will run simultaenously operating a split peak system. This will hopefully cut down considerably on waiting around time..

Judges will be looking for the length of ride, wave selection, change of direction, style and the most radical manoeuvres in the most critical part of the wave. i.e the curl.

Competitors should read their name, heat number and bathing cap colour and should report to the beach marshal ready to surf 5 minutes before the start of their heat. A horn blast will mark the start of the heat and double horn blast for the end. Time will be allowed for competitors to reach the waves before the start of each heat.

As in previous years the heats will be subdivided into juniors and seniors. Junior heats for the under 60’s and Senior’s a more stately over 60’s category.

Under 16s Competition Heats
All competitors must be under the age of 16 on the day of competition. Heats of up to 10 persons. Between 10 and 15 minutes duration. Boys and Girls heats will run simultaenously operating a split peak system. This will hopefully cut down considerably on waiting around time.

Competitors
All competitors take part, at their own risk. The organisers accept no responsibility for accidents and injuries. Qualified RNLI lifeguards will be on duty. All competitors must read the safety policy and listen to a safety briefing prior to surfing

Boards
WBBC competition boards should be less than 5ft in length, no wider than 2ft and no more than ¾” in thickness. They should be made of wood (fibreglass and composites acceptable in the expression sessions as are fins, flippers, small skegs, Alaia boards and Paipo’s. We expect a more traditional 1ft wide plywood board to be considered for the Arthur Traveller Memorial Trophy.

Swimwear
Bathing costumes only, no wetsuits allowed. Wetsuit/neoprene boots acceptable (if weever fish are present). Colour coded swim caps must be worn during Championship heats, Arthur Traveller Memorial Trophy heats and Junior comp heats to aid identification by the judges. These will be provided prior to the start of each heat, please check board for cap colour. For expression session wear what you like.

3 consecutive whistle blasts – all surfers must leave the water.
Regroup at top of beach for a head count.
Lifeguards will deal with situation.

You can come swim, paddleboard, SUP, train, do sport, eat chat > and welcome in the New Year with a day on the beach. We have bad weather provision> all welcome. We'd especially like to see the families of club members. Come meet the seniors, come play, come eat, come train and share a wonderful day with us on the beach. Bring a sausage.

If you want to pop down for a coffee, to chat then you know where we are. Turnout dictates activities-Qualified Lifeguards and SUP instructors will be on hand to get you on the water safely. We also make great coffee.We have suits if you want to get wet!

The Long Distance races that everyone wants to have a go at and achieve will be happening at Bournemouth on the 29th & 30th September running alongside the British IRB Championships.

Compass Bearing Challenge

Strolling out of the Plume of Feathers in Princetown on a route planned by Snowy but only noted down as 6 figure grid references, we attempted to use all our newly learned skills to navigate in a thick mist despite the seriousness of the task there was enough time look good in this artistic windswept pose

The route took us over many swolen rivers which for those smug and of normal leg length was fine

however miss Slatter was at a slight disadvantage here as the youngest of junior members have now overtaken her in the height stakes

but undeterred she took on another river and with Snowy on catching duty helped her achieve what those little legs have always dreamt of the oppurtunity to match the juniors agility

Look how she glides through the air so majestic, so elegant, oh so beautiful

When the weather turned we took refuge on a Tor, and to our delight the young Will Bowd took it upon himself to serenade us with his whistle

Before scaling the Tor and performing a little dance to ensure our morale was sky high

Snowy watched intensely and sketched and noted down all the moves and we expect to see his own rendition at the next presentation evening

The course costs £240 which includes, manual, Emergency First Aid at Work certificate and assessment. To secure your place we require a deposit of £50 six weeks prior to the start of any course (see our website for terms and conditions).

The only timed element of the course is that you need to be able to swim 400m in less than 8 minutes. This is completed in a swimming pool and is 16 lengths of a 25m pool.

Rowcroft Hospice Charity Sea Swim

On Sunday 4th September, 124 brave fundraisers took part in the one mile sea swim and aquathlon event in Teignmouth.

124 competitors, both novice and experienced, slipped on their wetsuits and swimming hats to take part in the challenging one mile swim. 68 of those opted to take part in the brand new aquathlon; a one mile swim followed by a two mile run around Teignmouth's sea front. They have pledged to raise in excess of £10,000 including Gift Aid, for the hospice.

The event, sponsored by South West Water was very well supported. Hundreds of spectators and competitors’ family and friends lined the beach front and pier as the participants completed the course. Palm FM were also on hand to provide a warm up and entertainment on The Den and Scott Richards Solicitors of Teignmouth ran a cake stall, raising £250 on the day.

All funds raised from the event will help fund Rowcroft's work both at the hospice and across South Devon.

Tasked by the club to provide safety for the event were four of our members Big Keith Hoppins, Sophie Waddell, Vicky Gall and Georgia Slatter so at 11 o clock they made the journey across the water to attend the safety briefing.

Kierron Dinsdale one of our members today attended the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital following chest tightness and discomfort during his efforts in the National Championships.
He had an appointment with the Cardiology Department and the leading Consultants who under there expert eyes was subjected to a Heart scan.

The heart scan is a rapid assessment tool for identifying haemodynamically significant cardiac abnormalities in the critical care setting, the scan uses the following views, the Parasternal windo, Apical Window and the Subcostal window to obtain a three dimensional picture of the heart in order to check firstly -

The size of the heart chambers.
The dimensions or volume of the cavity, and the thickness of the walls.
How the heart muscle is working and if there is any disease.
Whether there is any ventricle enlargement and how severe it is.

The pumping function of the heart.

A very tall order for a fifteen year old i'm sure you'll all agree, so it is with delight that I can confirm that the diagnosis has been made and i can confirm with the Dinsdale's clans consent that this young man. . . .

Hyde Park Triathlon and 2012 Olympic Warm Up

David ‘Tids’ Tidball, Dan Thorogood and Felicity Elliott – all members of the Exmouth Beach Rescue Club – provided rescue cover in the first Olympic test event that was also part of the World Championship Series.

The Hyde Park challenge was made up of a 1500m swim, a 40km bike ride and a 10km run.

Volunteer lifeguard ‘Tids’ Tidball said: “The many years of commitment shown by our volunteers has been justly rewarded by our selection as part of the Olympic 2012 water safety team.

“This role is a great honour that comes with great responsibility.

“The men’s event on Sunday was watched live on BBC2 and across the world by millions.

“If anything goes wrong with an athlete during a competition, it can be life-threatening and the team have to be the best in their field.

“Lifeguards from Exmouth and two other Devon clubs of Dawlish Warren and Saunton are the only clubs to have been chosen.

“We are proud to be recognised for our specialist ability.

“We are part of an elite group of volunteers who provide safety to water users across Devon on a daily basis, and to many thousands of amateur competitors at national and regional events.

“But the 2012 Olympics is the pinnacle of all these events.”

that was the local press but what they didn't manage to mention was Nigel Snowshall's effort to attend the start of the swim, insistent he wanted to give others the chance to crew the boat he set about powering himself to the event, he initially set out from Exmouth on a Prone Paddleboard to show the youngsters also attending the event to follow the individual swimmers how it was done, he began the 1.5 mile mile effort well on his knees

before hitting the water to swim the remaining distance to the event.

all of this effort just to attend let alone then provide safety cover at this brilliant local event.

when all sausages and burgers have been consumed, the chocolate and crisps despatched Snowy hatched a plan

lets see how flexible we are and pick up a piece of card with your mouth from the floor!
this was met with fear and utter confusion from Connor

and it is this that bought us on to the events conclusion.
Georgia, Flic, Jen and Snowy were the only ones elastic enough to take on the challenge

with Georgia taking top honours with a 50p pickup, while the others settled with the card

there was much celebration during the event once the jeans came off

Now to the Ski and our sole entrant taking on Competitors almost half his age in building swells Young Nigel Snowshall battled on for a bronze!

Fin and Connor took to the craft superbly to get 5th Place

In the Board Rescue the teams were beaten back to 5th for Fin and Kierron and 6th for Tom and Connor

all of this effort resulted in a runner up spot overall for the club

Another Year, Another set of Beach Events.

A Year on and the Devon's have once again come around! Tuesday the 28th saw the beach events being contested at Croyde!
The first event of the day was the 1k beach run, normally a 2k run but the guys I'm sure were content with the shorter distance.
In the 15 year old boys event we claimed the first of our medal hall with Kierron Dinsdale and his silver medal effort.

The Event then proceeded with Connor Ward who claimed another Silver medal with a 200m sprint to bump himself up from fifth and Fin Cawthera in the 16-17 year age groups

Next up were the girls who knew that the event wasnt necessarily their fortay but turned out immaculate performances.

The event to follow this was the Sprint

two dominating performances in the heat and Final saw another medal and gold for Kierron Dinsdale

a great dip for Connor to claim another medal and a strong performance by Fin ensured his medal fetish was quenched .

In the girls event Emily Kelly, Megan Edlin and Georgia Slatter ran well in the hotly contested 16-17 years age group with more to add to our medal tally.

the 18-19 year olds and open females was dominated with two Golds with a one two from Sophie Waddell and Sarah Beresford

The Mixed Sprint relay team consisting of Maff Richardson, Emily Kelly, Sophie Waddell and Fin Cawthera claimed Gold while Connor Ward, Georgia Slatter,Megan Edlin and Kierron Dinsdale were unfortunate just to be squeezed out to a fourth place finish

Next up was the crowd favourite and the most competitive of all the events the Beach Flags, set up on an upslope through soft sand the boys all just barely missed out on the medals but were responsible for some of the finest photos of the day.

Except Maff Richardson who due to Tom Merson's swift pop up and even swifter stumble allowed him to cruise to victory and a gold medal with a smile.

The Girls like Maff also had some good performances while others were surprised that they weren't eliminated in the first round.
Hannah Carder and Megan Edlin were very pleased with their results

Emily Kelly strode out to medal with a show of great strength and physical prowess that was tucked away somewhere within that petite frame of hers.

This year the 48^th annual Fairway Buoy swim took place this year on the 15^th of may, this year 26 entrants braved the surprisingly frigid waters.(11-12 degrees Celsius.).7 of which have been successful channel crossing swimmers.

The Club Provided Safety cover in a number of ways this year.

The Club Arancia crewed by Sarah Beresford and Nigel Snowshall himself a previous victor over the events gruelling mileage.

We provided half a dozen Cobra Ski Paddlers here's Sophie Waddell guiding out the lead swimmers.

And the ultimate in Paddling safety due to the ability to cover large distances and the bonus of a elevated paddling position providing excellent visibility to ensure comprehensive safety, the one thing that Exmouth as a club is gradually gaining acclaim for, Our Rescue Stand Up Paddleboard.

Piloted by Big Keith Hoppins he successfully guided this competitor the few miles out to sea through the deep water chop and back to the Union Jack they all departed from.

Nine days of art, music and culture in a beautiful seaside town. Hosted in a range of locations including; street performances, open house galleries, golden beaches, pubs, clubs and of course our main venue, the Manor gardens.
A fantastic local event which throughout the week was attended in some form for certain bits and pieces by nearly all the club members.

It was a good show with solid performances from a number of different ages and genres, and included two of our newly qualified Lifeguards performing in there few day old band,

EBRC Saunton Trip

A small 1-2 ft clean wave greeted us early Sunday morning following our travelling follies, which resulted in a detour for the Surf Taxi as Sophie managed to leave her Wetsuit at the club hut.
En-route we suffered our first casualty as during the detour, Unfortunately the stress of the trip resulted in Tids sandwich violently hurling itself from the dashboard to the floor hoping to end its short salad filled existence, however airway resuscitation was provided and it pulled through long enough to be devoured by its creator.

General board familiarisation in surf commenced, and considering some of the members have yet to even paddle the equipment let alone use in surf conditions the results were overall superb!

After some initial teething problems,

it was time to practice some Paddle board rescues in the surf

Tids cheekily maintained his rescue practice and abilities on the SUP

The course is open to candidates aged 16 and over and provides intensive theoretical and practical training in the theory and practices of Beach Lifeguarding, resuscitation, open water rescue skills and first aid. Beach Lifeguarding demands a range of different skills to allow for the varying conditions lifeguards may encounter. The main duties of a Beach Lifeguard are:

to supervise the activities and people on the beach
to identify hazards and take preventative measures
to endeavour to prevent accidents
to provide water-safety and safe sunbathing advice
to provide a point of contact for people on the beach
to provide basic first aid

Every Candidate, prior to the commencement of a National Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NBLQ) course must :
Be 16 years of age prior to commencing a course of training. Must be able to meet the following basic fitness criteria:

Jump/dive into deep water
Swim 400m in a recommended time of 8 mins
Swim 200m continuously on their front and back
Run at least 400m
Surface dive up to 2m

Rio de Janeiro, Notting Hill and New Orleans Mardi Gras are names synonymous in heading the word Carnival, well today was Exmouth's very own and The club marched the new shorter route 15 strong,

Tom and Jim the two pack horses took charge of the boat while the more attractive and cuter members of the club charmed the coppers off the very generous individuals who came out to watch the spectacle!

A masssive thank you to the public for their donations, we in no doubt will be set to spend the next few training nights finding pennies and more dotted around the boats hull and flooring, as well as attempting to count the potential copper mountains!

National Championships Results!!

This year’s National championships drew members Tom Merson, Jonny Hawkins, Felicity Elliott, Little Tom Jones, Robert Keywood, Georgia Slatter and Sophie Waddell, We shipped out Friday afternoon in BK’s Truck and Tom’s Van heading for Newquay to crash out in the biggest tent known to man at Hendra holiday park!

This weeks patrol was our last active patrol before the Surf lifesaving national national competitions at Tolcarne,

Fortunately the raging south easterly winds bought a wave beside the jet ski area and a raging shore dump off of the spit!

These conditions allowed the club members vital hours practising new skills and honing age old ones in tricky conditions!

The racing boards and Racing ski ventured out and members used the gym for a last ditch effort for extra fitness!!

It is also the weekend where we bid farewell to our members who were part of the RNLI service as that has ended until next year, however some will still be around tfor the remaining month as part of the volunteer patrols provided by the club!

Sunday the 22nd brings a wave

The Sunday gone was our patrol/training day caught on camera, the weather turned sour and the heavy downpour chased even the most hardened Grockle's away from the beach, this enabled us to launch the boat and learn important surf orientated skills, it also allowed us to get a cheeky little surf when the boat crews were kind enough not to squash the clean but little waves!

The sun was kind enough to return for the afternoon however the numbers on the sand was still shy of what is expected this time of year possible for repercussion of the earlier shower, but those that did provided us with a few minor first aids.

If you go down to Orcombe today your sure for a big surprise!!

Sunday our Guards at Orcombe Point witnessed quite a natural occurrence with the explosive opening of a sink hole beside our tower, the sand bubbled and curdled before slipping into a 6ft diameter hole, which the club tested for safety before cordoning of the area and organising the contact of of the council.

Starcross Swim

This year the tide assisted 1.75 mile swim from Starcross to Exmouth was chaperoned by the membership of Exmouth beach rescue on Kayaks, Prone Paddle boards and Stand Up Paddle boards as well as with our Arancia IRB,
The Club made there way over to the ferry steps and waited for the start of the event.
Due to the overwhelming entry of this years event the club was heavily relied on and thansk to our support all of the 28 entrants were able to take part.

These Gentlemen embarked on a 340 mile cycle ride following the Devon border as closely as possible in 6 days, they endured a heavy fall and injured knee as well as multiple punctures in one mile following a kick sustained to Joel's bike suffered on the Lynton railway.
The first night they reached Dulverton 97miles from their start after 10hrs19mins arriving at 2am, they stayed here until the morning when they departed for Combe Martin 39 miles away.
Their next stay was at Stratton 53miles away taking in the sights of the north coast, before heading down through some of Dartmoor national park towards the next resting area at Yelverton 43 miles later, where David unfortunately fell and injured his knee worthy of a hospital visit he left bandaged on the advice not to cycle more then 2 miles, however bravely they plodded on until Plymouth where repairs from that earlier kick were finally required following a double puncture within a mile. It was then on to Dartmouth 50 miles away before returning to Exmouth and finishing at our Beach Hut.

The figures have yet to be finalised but it is looking likely that the sum of around £500 will be entering the charities account.

Gentlemen we cant thank you enough, I'm sure after those hills your legs are happy to be resting.

Off-duty fireman Nigel is hailed a hero for rescue after saving drowning kayaker

AN off-duty fireman has been praised by the man he rescued from drowning, after his kayak capsized during a fishing trip off a Devon beach.

Nigel Snowshall, 42, who is also in charge of volunteers for Exmouth Beach Rescue, was paddle-boarding with his teenage daughter and her friend when his skills were put to the test.

Mr Snowshall was alerted to the 56-year-old man 500 metres off Budleigh Salterton.

He realised the man, who has not been named, was in the sea when his kayak overturned and paddled out to pluck him to safety and return him to his worried wife on the shingle.

"The man was in shock and hypothermic when I got to him," said Mr Snowshall, a watch commander at Exmouth fire station.

"He was exhausted and was beginning to turn blue with cold. He could easily have drowned.

"The man had been fishing in his kayak, but it capsized and he couldn't get back in. He lost his fishing rod and paddle.

"When I got to him he'd been in the water for about 45 minutes. I chaperoned him back in his kayak."

He added: "Back on shore my 14-year-old daughter Emily and her friend Emily Western helped wrap him in towels and get him warm.

"They even put his kayak back on the roof of his car. He was treated by an ambulance crew and taken to Exmouth Hospital suffering from hypothermia."

He was later discharged from hospital, non the worse for his ordeal.

"Conditions were very choppy," said Mr Snowshall. "He was such a long way out that I couldn't see him at first.

"He's very lucky to be alive. His legs were numb. Afterwards he couldn't thank me enough. But luckily this is the sort of thing I do as a member of the beach rescue. It was a good job we spent the day at Budleigh."

Mr Snowshall praised his daughter — also a member of the beach rescue — and her friend for their efforts in helping to comfort the man when he was brought ashore, saying beach rescue training had paid dividends once again.

The Exmouth RNLI inshore rescue boat was also called to the scene and Mr Snowshall paddled lifeboatman Kerry Wreford who was transferred from the inflatable to the beach to help the casualty.

London Triathlon

Courtesy of Swim Safety and the organisers of the London Triathlon the Arancia went to the capital to provide a rescue boat service for the competitors taking part in any of the 3 swim distances. The team that travelled up were BK Flic Maff and Tom.

Over the weekend the team worked hours from 4am until 7pm to cover the races and picked a handful of swimmers out of the water that got in to difficulty during this time.

Travelling up in the Prosite Van the boat was deflated just enough to provide a very comfy platform for the 7+ hour journey up due to both traffic volume and a fire in the Dartford tunnel.

We also used this event to show the clubs pioneering rescue techniques using a stand up paddleboard Courtesy Of Tids who with Jim also joined the Kayak teams to provide a higher point of visibility and help swimmers if required.

A tiring but overall great weekend was had and our presence was a great success, to celebrate we stopped of to grab some food at the famous Ace Cafe

The 4th of August came around and so did our Demo performed for the public beside the octagon, it is our opportunity to show those interested our rescue techniques and equipment an insight into the sport side of Surf Lifesaving and as well as a chance to meet our lifeguards and club members.

The rescues performed were the free swim, Peterson Tube rescue,Torpedo Buoy rescue, Paddleboard, Cobra Ski and IRB rescues on both concious and unconscuiuos patients. Ron our club president provided expert commentary and to cap it all off a mass rescue incorporating every one of the rescues!!

This weeks patrol was very quiet incident wise, considering how busy and hot the shores were.
The lifeguard team were split between Exmouth and Hyde Park for the Triathlon. however we still maintained our two posts on Orcombe Point and Maer rocks, which was the main culprit for the 8 cut feet, one cut knee and finger we provided assistance to and treated.
